Rylee's Story

Change often happens unexpectedly and can come in an instant. The Sova Family found this out when mom Kim began to show signs of high blood pressure which quickly led to severe preeclampsia and a potentially fatal diagnosis of HELLP syndrome (Hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelet count). Kim was admitted to the Birth Center at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist where she underwent an emergency C-section and sweet Rylee made her entrance into the world 7 weeks early, unable to breathe on her own. After two minutes, Rylee took her first official breath and started her journey in the NICU.

Rylee and Kim both had a long way to recovery and Kim knew sleeping on a couch in the NICU would not make it any easier. Thankfully, the nursing sta referred the Sovas to our Ronald McDonald House®! Kim said, “If it wasn’t for RMH, I wouldn’t have had as successful of a recovery…it was a blessing to not have to pay for meals and to have a place to rest and take hot showers.” After 21 days, Rylee passed the car seat test and was strong enough to go home to Statesville! Now, the Sovas are giving back to support other families. They have donated essential NICU items including blankets, towels, diapers, and outfits perfect for a preemie!

Like this sweet family of 3, your support ensures that RMHCPT is a space for rest and comfort no matter what changes our families face. Thank you for making our House a “home away from home.”
